The Woodlands Win-It Wednesday

December 2, 2015 8:25:36 AM EST

We couldn't be more excited about our upcoming in-store Woodlands Event, a celebration of Thirsties' gorgeous Woodlands Collection and fundraiser for Sycamore Land Trust. We know it can be a bummer for our not-so-local friends when they live too far away to join in on all the fun. Well, we have good news. Thanks to two of our very amazing and very generous sponsors, we're bringing the fun to you... THE WOODLANDS WIN-IT WEDNESDAYRead More

Do you have a cloth diaper that just doesn't get much love? Maybe you have one that's in good condition, but just isn't your favorite brand or style... one that sits at the bottom of the diaper bag, or at the back of the stack... I know I do. A few, actually. Three perfectly good diapers, just taking up space in my son's closet. I've decided those diapers need to go, and there's no better time than right now.Read More

It's day five of the Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry. For one full week, participants from all across the country promise to use flat cloth diapers AND wash them by hand. The purpose of the challenge is to raise awareness and spread the word that cloth diapers are a viable option for families struggling to afford clean diapers for their babies, even if they may not have easy access to a washer and dryer.

Today we are discussing our favorite folds for flats. Flat cloth diapers can be folded in a variety of different ways to add layers of absorbency right where your baby needs it. There are so many different and creative folds!

Last year, my plan was to learn and use a different fold for each day of the challenge, but my little guy had different plans. He didn't have time for that! He had places to go, things to see. So the entire week, I ended up pad folding. To pad fold, you simply fold the flat into a long rectangle, and lay it in the cover- just like an insert.

It's super easy! Here's how to do it:

 Lay out your flat.

Either fold the flat up or down in half, which is much easier without a kiddo standing on it ;)

Fold in half again, this time to the side.

Next fold the flat in thirds...

then lay it inside the cover and fasten the cover on the baby!

If you don't have any pins or a Snappi or you just want to go the easiest route when diapering your babe with flats (really, who doesn't?), using the pad fold is definitely the way to go! Plus you get many layers of absorbency in the wet zone of the diaper.

For the past year, whenever I've used flats on my son, I went ahead and pad folded them. I just assumed that he wouldn't sit still enough for any other folds. Surprisingly, he's suddenly decided to be cooperative and allow me to try out different folds! Head on over to my personal blog, Apron Strings Attached, where I share my new favorite fold!

Also, follow me on Instagram where I’ll share the good, the bad, and the yucky throughout my week participating in the Flats Challenge! (@apronstringsattached) If you’re participating in the challenge, be sure to use the hashtag #flatschallenge and #bringingflatsback so we can follow you too!  :)

Around this time last year, my friend, Jessica, tagged me in a Facebook post about the Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry... “Hey Stephanie, I’m doing this! Wanna do it with me?” At first, I didn’t read the post, but I got the gist of the challenge from the infographic. Participants of the Flats Challenge promise to use flat cloth diapers (the same ones your Grandma probably used) and WASH THEM BY HAND for one full week. When I saw it, I’m pretty sure I laughed! I thought to myself, “Has she gone crazy???” (Sorry Jess, haha!) Why on earth would I voluntarily put myself through using flat cloth diapers and dealing with folding and pins when I have this stash of great modern cloth diapers? AND washing them by hand for a whole week when I have a washer and dryer? I already have enough on my plate with four kids! Nope, not happening. Nooo thank you. Instead of saying ALL THAT, I “liked” the post and moved on. Then later on, she texted me… "Hey, did you read about the Flats Challenge? I am doing it and you should too! Read about it in the post I tagged you in." I replied... "Yeah, I saw the link…..it sounds cool. Our AC went out last night :( we are having a streak of bad luck, so I need to not spend any more money on diapers right now. [since I didn't have any flats] And I hardly keep up on laundry with four kids as it is… I think this may put me over the edge! lol :)" She said she understood and we changed the subject. After a few days, I found myself thinking about that post. I was curious why people would want to put themselves through that… why take the challenge? Why use flats when there are more modern options available? After I read the article, I had a change of heart. Hear me out and you may too…Read More
