The time has come for my little guy to say goodbye to diapers... we're moving on to big kid training pants! Super Undies generously sent me their Hybrid Trainer set, which includes a shell and three absorbent inserts. We've been testing it out for about a month now, and I'm very excited to share how it has worked for my little super hero...
The Hybrid is a one-size trainer, designed to fit most toddlers from 20 to 35 lbs. It features an adjustable snap down rise and two rows of back snaps. It fits my kiddo like a dream. He's 2 1/2 years old and a little over 28 lbs. I get the best fit for him by leaving the rise snaps open and the stretchy panels on the first set of back snaps. He still has plenty of room to grow.
I love how the Hybrid is nice and smooth in the front. The elastic around the waist sits under his tummy and seems comfortable for him. Although it's trim enough to go under his jeans without any issue, it does fit a little fluffy on the bum, much like some of his cloth diapers. I have tried other trainers that were trimmer than The Hybrid, but not nearly as absorbent!
The Hybrid comes in three fun colors to choose from- blue, green, and pink. My little guy's favorite color is green, so that's the one I went with. We were both pleased with the vibrant color. I also like how there is a contrasting color on the inside of the shell, it's a nice touch.
The one and only issue I have with The Hybrid is the back snaps, purely because of looks. They kind of stick up funny, and depending on the type of pants he wears, you can see the tabs through them. I don't notice it if he's wearing jeans, more so when he's wearing light-weight pants. Really, it was not a big deal. Not terribly noticeable, but enough to bug me. That said, I was VERY grateful for those back snaps when my son has a #2 accident! Clean up is so much easier and less messy when you can unsnap the trainer rather than trying to pull it down with mess inside.
The Hybrid set comes with a shell and three microfiber inserts that are topped with a special feel-wet material. Simply stuff one of the inserts inside the shell and it's ready to go. Once it's stuffed and the sides are snapped, you can slide The Hybrid on and off your little one much like underwear!
If your child doesn't make it to the potty on time, simply remove the wet insert from the shell and replace it with a clean one. You can reuse the shell over and over until it becomes soiled! It's easy to replace the inserts. The middle of the wetzone is open from front to back, allowing the insert to easily be placed inside. No shoving your hand in a narrow pocket!
Another great thing about the Hybrid is that you can customize the absorbency. You can use two inserts for heavy wetters or during naptime, or use different inserts all together- a padfolded prefold, hemp, or your favorite disposable insert. Whatever works best for you and your little one!
When my older children were potty learning, I had no idea there was a reusable pull-up option. Looking back, these would have saved us so much! We went through sooo many disposable pull ups with our first three kids. Since children typically use less diapers through the day when they start showing interest in the potty, you could probably get by with just two or three Hybrid sets to use them full-time. We've been using underwear at home and trainers for when we leave the house, so we don't need as many changes. One Hybrid Trainer set has worked great, but I think two sets would be perfect for us.
The Hybrid has worked so well for us! I would say out of all the trainers I've tried, it's my fave! I've found the inserts to be pretty absorbent, comparable to my son's pocket diapers. We haven't had any issues with leaks!
Using The Hybrid has been a good experience. My little guy is really embracing using the potty, and has been asking to go even when we are out of the house. Before using this trainer, we just used regular diapers when we left the house. In a hurry, I've had to completely unsnap them and try to get them back on him while standing... not an easy task! We don't have do deal with this when he's wearing The Hybrid. It easily slides up and down, and it's very comfortable for him, too! I would definitely recommend The Hybrid to anyone with a potty learning little one.
