Think before you snip...

Drop those scissors!!! Maybe when you started you stash you thought you loved pocket cloth diapers only to realize down the road that you don't. Maybe you've decided that prefolds or flats are more your style and you ready to rid yourself of all of those wretched pockets and buy some covers... then it dawns on you... why not just cut out the lining out of my pocket diaper and make it a cover? Sounds like a great idea! But there's several reasons why you may want to think twice...
It'll void the warranty
Many brands of pocket diapers come with great warranties, but if you alter the diaper in any way the warranty is voided. If you bought your diaper new, your warranty helps to protect your investment if you experience an issue during that time period. If you bought your diaper used, warranties don't typically transfer, so alter away! ;)
Could possibly damage the diaper
Just one wrong snip and you could mame your diaper for life! If the waterproof lining of the diaper gets accidentally poked or cut, you could have trouble with leaks and may need to find a way to repurpose your diaper. For ideas, click here!
You may change your mind
I know for myself, there have been times when I've gotten sick of a certain style and took a little break from it, only to end up loving it again later on down the road. Once you alter a diaper that drastically, there's no going back.
Devalue the diaper
We all know that cloth diapers typically hold their resale value pretty well. Some limited edition, hard to find prints even go for waaay more used than retail value brand new. Unless you do something totally awesome to your diaper, altering may bring down its resale value.
But what if you are just tired of stuffing pockets? Don't then! Who says you can't use your pocket shells as a cover? (Just be sure to use it with a material that is safe to go against baby's skin, as microfiber is NOT.) There are many covers out there that are lined... think GroVia Hybrid Shells and AppleCheeks. AppleCheeks is lined with microfleece and can either be used a pocket OR you can simple lay in the insert into the shell and use it as a cover. What makes the bumGenius 4.0 any different?
Lined covers can be used a few times between changes just as unlined covers can. Yeah, you may not be able to wipe them clean, but from my experience, whenever poo has gotten on the cover, it's usually gets on the the leg elastic so I end up having to change the cover anyway. If it gets damp, let it air dry in between uses and you should be able to get a few uses out of them.
Of course, what you do with your diapers is your own business. :) This post is just to let those considering cutting the lining out of their pockets because they would rather have covers, that they have other options. I'm sure there are people out there who've turned a bumGenius 4.0 into a makeshift Flip and are very happy with the result. I've seen some actually pretty cool alterations from changing out the snaps to different colors to the new fad of coloring dipes with fabric markers. If cutting up your pockets makes you happy, then snip away! :)
If the reason you're wanting to change your pocket to a cover is because your sick of microfiber, then stay tuned to next week... there are alternatives!
