All-in-one and affordable are not two words I typically hear in the same sentence all too often... They're the ultimate in cloth diapering convenience. No need to search for an absorbent insert to pair with a waterproof shell, an all-in-one has all this rolled up into one nice little package! But you typically have to pay a little more for this convenience.
Don't get me wrong, you'd still save a bunch of money with a stash of all-in-ones versus buying disposables, but they tend to be pricier than other cloth diapering options. So, needless to say, I was really surprised when I saw the price of the Thirsties Duo All-In-One. A VERY affordable all-in-one? Was it too good to be true? Thanks to The Green Nursery, I was about to find out!
TGN sent me the Thirsties Duo All In One in a size 2 to review. This diaper is available in two different sizes to accomodate most babies from birth to potty-training. For little newbies, size 1 should start fitting around 6lbs up to 18 lbs. Once your baby reaches the top end of that weight range, you'll need to switch to size 2, which should fit most babies from 18 lbs all the way up to 40 lbs.
Each size, both size 1 and size 2, come with three rows of rise snaps to adjust the diaper from the smallest to the largest setting, allowing the Duo All-In-One to grow with your little one. My newly-turned two year old who is around 26 lbs. I have the rise snapped on the middle setting. It fits him great, with room to grow!
This diaper comes in either snaps or Aplix (like Velcro, but different name brand). Many families choose snaps for their durability, but I have to say Thirsties new(er) Aplix is my favorite of any cloth diaper I've tried! I find it to be strong and durable, and hold up very well. It's just a personal preference. Snaps are a great option too! They're are more durable than Aplix and tend to be more difficult for little hands to remove.
A Look Inside
The inside of the Thirsties Duo All-In-One is like a little cloud of softness! The diaper has a built-in three-layer microfiber terry soaker, that can absorb SEVEN TIMES its weight in liquid. It's topped with a buttery-soft stay-dry microfleece to keep baby feeling nice and dry.
The attachment of the soaker creates are really great feature! It's attached along the leg elastic on both sides, but unattached at the front and the back of the diaper, leaving a tunnel right through the middle where additional absorbency can be added if needed. You could add a hemp, bamboo, or really any type of absorbent insert beneath the quick-absorbing microfiber soaker pad, which is great for heavy wetters, nap-time, and night-time.
All in all, I'm really impressed with this diaper! Although it's not a one-size diaper, and you may need to purchase both sizes through your baby's diapering days, for a high-quality, USA-made all-in-one, the Duo All-In-One is very affordable! I have to admit, because of my extremely hard water, I'm not a huge fan of microfiber, but as long as I keep up on using Calgon (a water softening agent) in the wash, I don't have issues with microfiber stink. If this diaper came in natural fibers, it would be one of my very favorites. Regardless, it's still pretty high up there on my list!
It's so nice to be able to grab a diaper and not have to do ANYTHING with it but put it on my son. No stuffing, no adjusting, no nothing. To sum it up in three words, the Thirsties Duo All-In-One is simple, affordable, and comfortable. It's definitely a cloth diaper I'd recommend, and one I'd love to have more of in my stash!
